Friday’s Photo of the Week (Chinese Impulse Purchase)

Hungry?

Hungry?

In every convenience store around the world, right next to the register resides those impulse purchases. Things that people buy on a whim. In the west it might be chocolate or gum or some sugary confection and they have those in China, but upon every counter resides a crock pot full of black liquid in which burble cracked eggs. Stacked and floating in what I assume is a mixture of soy sauce and water, these eggs tempt rushing business people in the morning, university students looking for a mid-afternoon bite and people craving a midnight snack.

I have yet to succumb to the oddly alluring stained egg vat but who knows…

  1. They’re tea eggs. =) They burble around and as they cook, the tea soaks into cracks in the shell and you end up with crazy pavement eggs. =D They cook a LONG time. Longer than humanly necessary. Beware. =D
