Friday’s Photo of the Week (Nanjing Electricity Doomsday Meter)

108... something on my electricity meter.

108… something on my electricity meter.

This week I found out I’ll be based in Nanjing for at least the foreseeable future.
A very good thing as I’m already adapting quickly to the social opportunities not available in Binhai; Sunday means cricket (badly) and Thursday’s game of football (soccer) permits me to remember just how much I enjoy the sport (and how rusty my skills are.)

I live on the sixth floor of the college with a bunch of other teachers, now instead of being the sole waego in the city, I blend into the crowd of teachers (at our school) and students at nearby Nanjing University.

The most entrancingly curious new aspect of live here, I pay for electricity. The apartment comes as part of the contract, but I can’t help but stare and obsessively watch the meter tick down towards zero, knowing I’ll have to add more Yuan to my card.

As doomsday clocks go it doesn’t rate, but I can’t help but watch and stare.
Daily.

Tick tock. Tick tock.
